Since I wasn't in the mood for pillows yet :) I decided
to start work on the Chess Table Bench.
I cut out these 3 basic shapes out of foamcore and
used the slice technique to curve the foamcore. |

This is the base of the bench. The height was measured
using Han Solo as a guide. |

The bench has 5 seats or spaces to sit and is not
quite a half circle. More like 4 O'clock. |

I used a taller piece of foamcore for the back and
used the Hot Glue gun to stick them all together.
Don't worry about sloppyness since it will all be
covered with Super Sculpey anyways. |

Here's a better picture showing you the scale and
proportions. |

Oh yes, how could I have forgotten :) Theres a big
gap where the Chess Table and bench goes.
As you can see, Hasbros table is WAY out of proportion.
We will have to re-sculpt it. But that will have
to wait till next week. ;P |

Time to detail the bench. I started with a skin layer
of Super Sculpey that is draped over the foamcore
like a blanket on your couch. |

Here you can get a better idea of what I did.
Don't worry about covering the back because it will
be hidden when the back desk shape is put in place. |

October 20, 2001
After using my paint Stripper gun to harden the Sculpey,
it's time to put a skin for the pillow.
I made a snake and placed it on the front of the
pillow and then blended it together to make a rounded
lip that hangs slightly over the base. |
|
 |

Now I added a skin at the base and made the lip a
little thinner.
Now I decided to place it in the oven to make sure
the Super Sculpet was hardened evenly.
Yes the foamcore will melt and distort but there
is enough Sculpey to prevent the shape from colapsing. |

Before putting in the oven, I divided the bench pillow
into 5 sections like in the movie.
Now we can "bake the bench" Hmmm, sounds
like a gameshow title - LOL. |

Once the base was hardened, I was able to add a layer
of details.
I rolled a skin of Super Sculpey and cut out the
pattern using my reference picture.
Next was the tedious task of blending each piece
individually onto the base.
4 hours later this is what the finished detail looks
like. Pretty cool :) Now we bake another 15 minutes. |

If you look at the movie there is a support brace,
if you can call it that, behind the bench.
I started by cutting the proper counter top shape
out of a piece of foamcore. |
|
 |
 |
November 04, 2001
Cut a 7cm piece of foamcore and turn the counter
top upside down.
Using the slit technique, make it bend around the
corner and use the Hot Glue Gun to attach it in place.
Two extra 7cm pieces act as end supports. |

This is what the shape now looks like from the top. |
